Step 1: Gather Tools and Materials
Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools:
Measuring tape
Pen or pencil
Paper for notes
Level (for outside mount, for precise measurements)
Step 2: Decide on Mounting Type
There are two main types of mountings for blinds:
Inside Mount: The blinds are mounted within the window frame.
Outside Mount: The blinds are mounted on the wall or trim, covering the entire window frame.
Decide which type you prefer before you start measuring.
Step 3: Measure the Window for Inside Mount (If Chosen)
If you are opting for an inside mount, follow these instructions:
Measure the width:
Use the measuring tape to measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom.
Take the smallest of these three measurements. Do not subtract anything from this width, as blinds are made to fit within the window frame.
Measure the height:
Measure the height of the window opening from the top to the sill (or bottom of the frame).
Measure at the left, middle, and right sides. Use the longest measurement to ensure the blinds cover the entire window.
Check for Obstructions:
Make sure there are no obstructions (like handles, locks, or window cranks) inside the frame that could interfere with the blinds
.
Step 4: Measure the Window for Outside Mount (If Chosen)
If you are choosing an outside mount, follow these instructions:
Measure the width:
Measure the total width of the area you want the blinds to cover, which should extend beyond the window frame. Add a few inches on each side to ensure the blinds completely cover the window and provide better light control and privacy.
Measure the height:
Measure from the top of where you want the blinds to start down to where they should end (usually to the window sill or slightly below).
Consider how far down you want the blinds to fall and if you want extra coverage (such as extending below the sill or covering part of the wall).
Account for Clearances:
Ensure you have adequate clearance above the window for the headrail of the blinds. This is particularly important if the window frame is narrow.
Step 5: Record Your Measurements
Write down each measurement carefully, noting which is the width and which is the height, and whether they are for inside or outside mount.
Double-check your measurements to avoid any mistakes.
Step 6: Consider the Type of Blinds
Different types of blinds (e.g., vertical, horizontal, roller) may require slightly different measurement methods or additional measurements, such as for the depth of the window frame or the mounting brackets.
Step 7: Order Your Blinds
Once you’ve recorded your measurements, you can now order your new blinds from your chosen retailer.
When placing the order, make sure to specify whether you want an inside or outside mount, as this can affect how your blinds are sized.
Step 8: Install Your New Blinds - Hopefully you measured the right way!
Once your blinds arrive, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation.
If you’re mounting inside the window frame, ensure the blinds fit snugly. If you’re mounting outside the frame, ensure they are centered and level for a neat appearance.
By following these steps, you'll be able to accurately measure for new blinds, the right way!
